History

According to the tribe's webpage, "The Kussoe Indians are Native to the SC lowcountry and are documented in history fron at least 1670 froward. Around 1700 the Kussoes were granted land near the Edisto River (called Pon-Pon by the Indians), also known as Spoons, referred to as Osbourne by the locals. Our other ancestors of our tribe descend from the Natchez Indians, which were once a vvery numerous and powerful tribe that lived around present day Nathez, Mississippi. During the 1720s the Natchex went to war with the French and ran them out. In 1729 they went to war again and the French who allied themselves with the Choctaw, ran he Natchez out. Many of them sought refuge among the Cherokee in NC. In 1734 the first group of Natchez Indians left the Cherokee and came to Charleston seeking protection from the English. In1747 another group came from Cherokee County in NC, and the Govenor of SC granted them land near Edisto River."
